RE: Early 20s Considering Doing This

Don't see why not. If I may make a suggestion - pay off whatever debt you do have and try to start out free and clear. It makes things much easier. You can get many jobs that require only a few hours per day and are in lovely settings out of the city if you look around. Try workamping. Volunteer. Whatever you do, I wish you luck.

RE: Flip my coin - retirement now?

I agree - don't give up something you love. It will help you get through each day rather than waking up and wondering how things are going financially. If you can make it one more year and be better off and love what you do, then you are ahead of the game. Hang in there - cancer isn't the automatic death sentence it once was and may you have many years ahead of you.

RE: If Banks fail(Depression?) should I have Cash on hand?

Hard to say for sure but I think some of the people who would know would be those who weathered the Great Depression. I'd like to hear from some of them as to their thoughts on the subject and what really happened during those years. I know that some made money - some always make money! - but with the nervousness of the markets right now I think the retelling of their stories would be most interesting. I strongely suspect that our vagabond life will come to a screeching halt (that sound you hear is me crying!) and the people most able to weather it will be those like Mrs. Mik!

RE: Sometimes.......the person hardest to forgive.......

It does seem to me that we are hardest on ourselves - remember some boneheaded thing you did as a kid and tell me you don't squirm at the thought! And chide yourself for being so dumb!

RE: One more bank gone.

As someone once said (might have been Twain) 'There's lies, damned lies, and statistics'. I could be wrong but what I gather is that the posters are worried about the trickle-down effect that banks closing, money losing value, credit becoming tight, and govt bailouts will be having on our ability to continue to go camping/rving and just life in general. It's not fearmongering to worry about such things since the stock markets, housing markets, and consumer credit all show a definite inclination to decline...some of them sharply in certain areas. The country is so big that it takes time for the effects to be felt in all areas. Unfortunately, unlike the trickle-down economy theory that we had to live through (something like give to the rich/big corps and the money will trickle down to the workers via new jobs, etc. It didn't work very well but a lot of rich people did get more money!) this trickle-down seems to be gathering momentum. People who saved their money and didn't use credit will still see their money's value erode even though they did nothing wrong. So it does affect all of us. Eventually. To a greater or lesser degree. It may be nothing more than market correction but I think that those of us who recall the Great Depression will remember that didn't start out big either. I'm not a gloom-and-doom person in general but I also don't believe in pretending that things are great when I can look around and see people hurting.

RE: Pine Beetle in the Rocky Mountain area

It seems that fire is the only answer and the govt won't let it happen. The winters are so warm now that the beetles don't die off but have two to three more cycles than normal, which means that they will spread as far as they can and it's alot further than normal. Guess they would make good firewood but that's about it.

RE: Anyone got an adult child living at home?

Once they grow up they should be responsible for themselves. They have good jobs now so they should be out the door and living on their own - none of this sucking up Mom and Dad's limited resources. They can save for a house while living on their own - lots of people do it! Sounds like an excuse to me and a fairly selfish one at that. They need to get out and quit trying to guilt-trip you! Or, conversely, sit down with them and show them how much they are costing you in food, utilities, etc. Make them draw up a realistic budget and pay their fair share of the costs. Then if they don't want to move out from beneath your feathered rears they will atleast not be such leeches!

So glad that things have worked out for you and what started out as a melancholy posting has now turned into a joyful one. I can foresee something like that in our future as well, and hope to transition into it as gracefully as you have. Best of luck and see you on the road!

RE: How To Pay For Next Winters Trip

Any address or phone number on Maria Gonzales? We need to head that way for some work as well! While at VCU in Richmond VA we patronized the dental school and they were very good, very thorough, and affordable, and I would suspect that other schools are also.

RE: Off to Alaska July 1st LA to Fairbanks and back

Try stopping by Liard Hot Springs on your way up - nothing like a good hot soak after a long day sitting! Very scenic place, too. Make sure you have lens protectors on your headlights - thrown rocks can shatter them and there's lots of gravel around. Don't forget that planes have right-of-way on highways to land and try to have somewhere to pull off in mind. Take atleast two spare tires and/or cans of fixaflat. Don't go too fast as the frost heaves will beat you to death. Don't leave the car to photograph the animals! Enjoy the trip - Alaska is a great place and the drive up and back constitute a good part of it.

RE: We Are Going Off The Grid In TN

Really good idea! DH and I have investigated solar, micro-hydro, and wind for our place in MO. Don't have to worry about losing power during the summer or during an ice storm that way. Only concern I have for wind is the stability of the tower during some of the storms we get. Will be following your odessey and wish you the best of luck!

RE: Good Fortune for Alaskans?

I'm not an Alaskan (though I wish I was!) but I know that they still get the refund money each year, which is a good thing since everything costs so much more up there. As for batteries - engine block heaters take care of that in the winter, I believe. Why not give any surplus back to the people?

RE: Who has gone from a tow vehicle/trailer to a class A

We went from a class A to a fiver in 04 and are pretty happy with it. Now that so many mhs are being sold we're thinking about switching back and towing a car again. Figure that the money we save using an efficient toad will help to make up for the fuel the mh will use. But we're still in the tentative stage and not ready to leap out there.

RE: Fulltime for life?

We've been fulltiming for 6 yrs now, give or take a month or two.
Only thing I miss is my large garden - but I have a very nice container garden that gives us healthy tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and squash so I can get my fix.
Don't miss anything really about a s/b
No plans to return to one.
Probably just stay in our fiver til we skid into the grave!
